How to choose a web design company in Pune: a checklist
A practical checklist for comparing agencies: ownership of domain and hosting, portfolio, maintenance, SEO basics and red flags.

Choosing a web design company in Pune is a bigger decision than it looks. The website will be the first thing many customers see, and the agency you pick will often hold the keys to it. A bad choice can mean a slow site, hidden renewal fees or a domain you cannot take with you. This checklist helps you compare agencies calmly and spot trouble early.
1. Who owns the domain, hosting and files?
This is the most important question, so ask it first. Your domain name (yourbusiness.com) should be registered in your name, with you as the owner and admin contact. The hosting account and the website files should be yours as well, or at least handed over on request. Some agencies keep everything under their own account, which makes it hard to leave later. Ask in writing: "If I want to move to another company, will you hand over the domain, hosting access and files?"
2. Look at real, finished work
A portfolio should show live websites you can open yourself. Open them on your phone. Check how quickly they load, whether they are easy to use and whether they look as good on a small screen as on a laptop. Look for work in your own field or something similar. You can see our own finished projects on the work page.
Be careful with portfolios made of screenshots only, or with sites that no longer exist. If you want to know how a project went, ask for a reference you can speak to. Never accept a claim you cannot check.
3. Ask who actually does the work
Some agencies sell a project and pass it to a freelancer or an overseas team you never meet. That is not always bad, but you should know. Ask who designs, who writes, who builds and who you will speak to when something goes wrong. A named contact you can reach by phone or WhatsApp is worth a lot.
4. Check what is in the quote
Ask for the scope in writing, page by page: number of pages, features, who writes the content, who supplies images, how many rounds of changes, and the delivery time. Compare quotes against the same list, as explained in our guide to website cost in Pune. Confirm whether GST is included and which costs repeat every year, such as the domain, hosting and email.
5. SEO basics should not be an afterthought
A website nobody can find is a brochure in a drawer. Even if you are not buying a full SEO package, a good agency should set up the basics as part of the build:
- A clear title and description for each page
- Proper headings and page structure
- Fast loading on phones
- A sitemap and a robots file
- Your business name, address and phone number in plain text
- A connection to Google Search Console so you can see how the site performs
Ask them to explain these in simple terms. If the answer is vague or full of jargon, that tells you something.
6. Ask about maintenance and support
Websites need care: software updates, security fixes, backups and small content changes. Ask what happens after launch. Is there a support period? What does a monthly plan cost, and what does it include? How quickly do they respond? Is a small text change charged separately? It is much easier to agree this before the work starts than after.
7. Understand the process and timeline
A good agency can explain its steps: a discovery conversation, a plan for pages and content, design, build, testing and launch. It should tell you what it needs from you and when. A realistic timeline for a business website is a matter of weeks rather than days, and a promise to launch a custom site in two days should make you ask questions.
Red flags in a web design company in Pune
- The agency keeps the domain or hosting in its own name and does not explain why.
- Guaranteed number one ranking on Google. Nobody outside Google can guarantee a position.
- No written scope or contract, only a verbal promise.
- Pressure to pay everything up front with no stages or milestones.
- A portfolio you cannot verify, or work that is copied from templates and presented as custom.
- Vague answers about who builds the site and what happens afterwards.
- Surprise charges that appear once the work has started.
- No interest in your business: if they never ask who your customers are, the design will be generic.
Questions to take to every meeting
- Will the domain and hosting be registered in my name?
- Can I see three live websites you built, and speak to one client?
- What exactly is included in the price, and what is not?
- Who will write the text, and who will source the images?
- How will the site be tested on phones?
- What SEO set-up is included?
- What support do I get after launch, and what does it cost?
Local matters, but not above everything
Working with a Pune agency means you can meet, talk in your own language and visit the office if needed. That is a real advantage for many small businesses. But location should come after ownership, quality and clarity. If you want to know how we approach local projects, read about our web design in Pune work.
